Soulardarity names new executive director

This Earth Day, the future looks bright for the environmental justice community of Highland Park, Michigan. Shimekia Nichols will be the new executive director of Soulardarity, a small but mighty nonprofit that is re-lighting the town with solar-powered streetlights after the original streetlights were repossessed by the local utility. Bonus feature: The new streetlights also provide public wi-fi for residents who lack internet access.

Climate prize awards ceremony features star power

Story: CBS News meteorologist Jeff Berardelli and supermodel Amber Valletta hosted the 2020 Keeling Curve Prize awards recognizing 10 of the world’s top global warming mitigation projects. Stars from the kitchen, the media, and the environmental movement presented the awards.

& Reach: NowThis News and NowThis politics are among the media partners that livestreamed the show, which attracted more than 455,000 views. Media outlets from Iceland to Colorado covered the winners, which ranged from a project that turns carbon dioxide into stone to an initiative bringing solar energy to rural Africa.

Story: The Solutions Project launched Climate Curious, a new livestreamed show featuring humor and raw talk that educates, entertains, and inspires viewers to get involved in the climate justice movement. Actor Mark Ruffalo appeared in the premiere episode, along with activists Rev. Leo Woodberry of the Justice First campaign and Elizabeth Yeampierre of UPROSE.
